Arriving at Krabi Beach, Thailand

beaches, other adventures, Thailand

Hold on to me as we go,

as we roll down this unfamiliar road – Phillip Phillips, “Home”

IMG_6155For most people, the vacation destination is just that, someplace to arrive and begin relaxing or having an adventure. For us, the destination is just a stopover on our continuous adventure, and getting to Krabi Beach, Thailand was no different. We had fun flying from San Francisco to Seoul. We had fun even if only for just one day in Seoul and we had an adventure on our two flights; first to Bangkok and then to Krabi. Catherine, of course, entertained us the whole way and managed to be the object of surprising amounts of attention from the Asians we met along the way. They touched her cheeks, they talked to her in strange languages, and they even posed for pictures with her. After getting over the initial surprise, we learned to appreciate the extreme fondness that Asian cultures have for small children.

This remarkable attraction to children continued once we boarded the last Thai flight, where Catherine danced in the aisle for the crew, clapping and skipping in her patented way to her favorite song, Je Te Donne. Of course they clapped and danced with her. The approach that we repeatedly saw to children made us stop and reflect on our own cultures and how beautiful and healthy their perspective is. The experiences reinforced that children are the best part of life and that they are the perfect counterbalance to stress and aging. They’re our legacy and the only way we live forever.

The destination

We arrived at the Krabi Airport at 7:30pm after watching an excellent tropical sunset on our short flight from Bangkok. The Thai Airways crew was beyond friendly, of course, and we were ready to have our beach vacation with a French couple that was waiting at the Sheraton Krabi with their own little girl very close to Catherine’s age. The hotel van was waiting for us as expected and took us the rainy, 40-minute ride to the hotel.
