The following is a guest post by Aaron Broberg, winner of the Mountain High season’s pass.
A great place to ski is more than just the size of the facilities or the number of runs. For me, a great place has to be one that is close enough to go when I have the time, which is sometimes an afternoon or just one day of a weekend. A great place to ski also has to have enough natural snow to keep things interesting and most of all, has to be a place where that has a small-town feel even while offering enough terrain to ski a different run all day long. For me, that’s Mountain High, in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California.
It would surprise people who haven’t skied at Mountain High to know that such a place exists within Los Angeles County. From the Los Angeles side of the San Gabriels, it might appear that snow doesn’t stay for long on the peaks above the city, but the snow falls and stays on the east-facing slopes where Mountain High is found. There are few places with more sunshine and better skiing conditions than what you can find in Southern California. Skiing in shorts and t-shirt on great snow isn’t unusual at Mountain High.
And when the snow doesn’t fall for a week or two, the snowmaking at Mountain High is more than enough to keep the slopes open and enjoyable. When you can have it all…sun and snow, both close by, Southern California lives up to its reputation very well.
